Company History

Enercon Ltd. (dba Grumman|Butkus Associates) was founded as a one-person energy consulting firm in 1973 in Evanston, IL, by Dave Grumman. Co-founder Al Butkus joined the following year. Early clients included Hyatt Hotels, the College of Lake County, Springfield's Lincoln Library, and Mercy Hospital of Chicago.

The firm won its first ASHRAE Illinois award in 1981, for a design project at the College of Lake County. That same year, GBA opened its first branch office, in suburban Milwaukee.

The DBA name Grumman|Butkus Associates was selected by the company in 1982. Seven years later, the headquarters moved to its current location at 820 Davis St., Evanston, IL. A second Wisconsin office, in Madison, was also launched in 1987.

ASHRAE honored the firm with its first first-place Society-level awards in 2003, for two resort projects in Hawaii. In 2009, the GBA-designed Heartland Community College Workforce Development Center was the first building funded by the state of Illinois to achieve LEED certification.

Additional LEED milestones for the firm include the Advocate Lutheran General Patient Care Tower in Park Ridge, IL (Gold, 2010, the first hospital in the Midwest to achieve LEED Gold) and the Radio Flyer Headquarters in Chicago (Platinum, 2013).

GBA opened its New York regional office in 2013, serving a growing demand for commissioning services.

In 2020, Trend Sumo, GBA's in-house fault detection and diagnostics platform, received registered trademark status from the US Patent and Trademark Office. The firm's Energy Sumo dashboard platform followed in 2022.

In 2023, GBA was honored by local electrical utility ComEd with its Energy Service Provider of the Year Award for the utility's Energy Efficiency Program: the latest in a string of utility awards.
